Question:
How can I get my 6-month-old to stop biting me when I am breastfeeding her? She has lower teeth, one top tooth, and a second top tooth coming through.
Answer:
Once teething begins, it's actually very common for infants to start biting while breastfeeding. This can be very uncomfortable, if not painful, for the breastfeeding mother. Even small nipple injuries can make future feeds very uncomfortable. Babies usually bite at the end of feeds, when they're full and want to play. Try this solution: as soon as you feel your
baby biting, gently slip your finger between your baby's gums to release her from your nipple. While you're doing this, say "No" firmly with a stern look on your face. Even if your
baby laughs, you'll have to keep a straight face. You may have to repeat this a few times before your
baby learns to stop biting.
